Description
The Song of the Sea is a celebration of life. Coral reefs bustle with activity, colourful fish, octopus and eels weaving through the coral. Seals hunt their elusive prey in dense kelp forests. Gentle whales traverse wide swathes of the open ocean. Gulls, albatross, and storm birds soar over the wave crowns. Flying fish leap from from them, getting caught in their beaks, or escaping to safety - if they’re not caught by the pod of dolphins racing just beneath the surface below them Storm clouds brew in the atmosphere, soon unleashing unrelenting winds that stir the waters, transforming gentle waves into towering, grey mountains. Clouds of krill and jellyfish float aimlessly in the currents. In the depths, wide-eyed fish, giant squid, and bizarre siphonophores spend their lives in the lightless dark. Pale crabs gather around thermal vents, feeding on ancient bacteria.
It is a great dance, sometimes playful, sometimes soothing, sometimes sinister. The song reverberates through every denizen of the sea, carried from one to the other and passed on again. To us, who left the waters thousands of millennia ago, it sounds strange and otherworldly - and yet familiar. The sea is the ancestral home of every living thing on earth, the womb from which everything sprang. We cannot understand the song, just like we might not remember the sound of our mother’s heartbeat. But it is with us, and when we visit the water’s edge, we can feel its faint call. The water in our cells resonates with the sound of the waves. It is exciting, comforting, and humbling. For a short moment, we float weightlessly in the deep blue - before our bodies and need for air drag us back to the rocks, beaches, and boats floating on the surface.
