weather report cosiness

In a movie that I recently watched, the weather (a typhoon, to be precise) plays a key role for the progression of the plot. To foreshadow this, weather reports are used as background noise during establishing shots throughout the movie. The camera pans across a room in a house, and somewhere, a voice on the radio talks about the current location of the typhoon and when it's expected to make landfall.

This is a common filmmaking technique. For example, a crime drama might start with a policeman reading a newspaper with a murder case on the front page, or the early scenes of an alien movie might feature TV footage of people being interviewed about a strange thing they saw.

But for some reason, I really like the weather report version of this trope, specifically. It just feels ... cosy. I think weather report cosiness is definitely a thing, evidenced by things like the BBC's Shipping Forecast. It's a forecast originally aimed at seamen or ship captains, but has attracted a much wider audience. It also continues to be broadcast even though nowadays, seafarers have much better and more convenient options for checking the weather.

The weather is interesting in the sense that it's both super mundane (it's what first pops into your mind when you think about a boring conversation topic) and sublime at the same time. Humans can't really influence the weather. Yes, there are technologies like cloud seeding or snow guns - those are very limited in their scope and effectiveness though. Human-made global warming is influencing weather patterns, but in this case, we're talking about broad trends, where the effects can only be seen across multiple years or decades. The weather of any given day, week, month or season is still out of our reach.

On the grand scale, the weather is something that we're simply exposed to. If we don't like it, the best thing we can do is deal with it. The best thing we can do is observe, and act accordingly. In the case of catastrophic storms or floods, being at the mercy of the weather can be scary. However, when the stakes are lower - a strong-ish storm, perhaps, a few days of heavy rain, a short heatwave - we enter the cosy space. You hear about the upcoming (or currently unfolding) situation on the weather report, check or experience it yourself by looking out of the window or walking through town, and arrange yourself with it. There's a sense of being one with nature here, going about your life in accordance with its patterns. There's some tension, but it's not overwhelming. Overall, things are manageable. You hear that there will be rain, so you grab an umbrella and wear some boots when you go outside, or simply stay home.

Having to walk through heavy rain under an umbrella and still somehow managing to get soaking wet is inconvenient. But it also reminds you of the fact that we are but a part of this world, entangled in its web, not its all-controlling masters. Weather reports are another reminder of this, and that's where the cosiness comes from.
